Having racꦛed in F1 until the end of the 2019 season, and after deputising for Racing Point duo Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll at three races last year, Hulkenberg has vast experience of the current generation of F1 cars, as well knowledge of Mercedes’ power unit.

“There are certai❀n races where there is a😼n overlap,” said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. “Nico knows the current generation Formula 1 cars and the tyres.

“And it would be good to have him in the line-up as💖 a solution, maybe to be shared with other teams, because he’s a known quantity and well respected.

“So, it wouꦺld be good, but we didn’t put pen to paper.”
