F1 champion Lewis Hamilton blasts “unacceptable” racist abuse of England stars
England’s hopes of ending a 55-year wait for a ✨major trophy were dashed in an agonising penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley on Sunday night.
Even before kick-off, the match was overshadowed by the behaviour of ticketless England fans who broke into Wembley, a♏s well as unsavoury scenes witnessed across the capital in the build-up to the game.
Rashford, San🌳cho and Saka each missed penalties in the 3-2 shootout loss and all three players were subjectedꦏ to a barrage of racist abuse on social media.
“The racial abuse♏ on social media towards our players after yesterday’s game is unacceptable,” Hamilton said on Instagram.
“This sort of ignorance has to be stopped. Tolerance෴ and respect for players of colour should not be conditional. Our humanity should not be condiꦍtional.
“Please call out those you see posting hatred online. Challenge 🅠them to see the humanity in everyone regardless of their colour.
“Super proud of how far the England team were ꦉable to go. Super proud of Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and the entire team.”
England manager Gareth Southgate described the abuse - which is being investigated by The Metropolitan Po😼lice - as “unforgivable”, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemned it as “appalling”.
The Duke of Cambridge, who watched the match at Wembley with Prince George and the Duchess of Cambridge, tweeted: “I am 🎉sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players ဣafter last night’s match.
"It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrꦏent behaviour. It must stop now and all those involved 🌼should be held accountable."
